as a matching gift of $1,000 to the library of the winner’s
choice.

Sarah Pennypacker, winner of this year's
Little d Award for Clementine, spoke at the Fort Orange Club on November 12th to
a room filled with the friends and family of denise McCoy, children's
book lovers, local media personalities, and members of city government.
The Little d Award was established in 2004 to honor the memory
of CLC founding member denise McCoy and is presented to the author
of a book of humor, denise's favorite genre. (Yes, denise spelled
her name with a lower-case d.) Sarah’s entertaining, moving
and funny speech emphasized why she believes so strongly in encouraging
young people’s individual gifts, whatever they may be.
She said the character of Clementine is a kind of blending of
the personalities of her two children, a son with severe ADHD,
and a creative and high-achieving daughter. Find out more about
Sarah at www.hyperionbooksforchildren.com
Carol Barker, the Library Media Specialist
at the Wheelerville Union Free School won a visit from Jennifer Armstrong for her
school from the raffle at CLC's annual Fall Festival of Books.

New CLC Fellowship Award Recipient Announced
Robyn Pforr Ryan was awarded the second CLC Fellowship at the annual
membership dinner last spring. The Fellowship Grant was created
to support the professional development of our members, as they
strive to contribute to the world of children’s literature.
It includes CLC membership dues and entrance fees to all CLC
events during the fellowship term of two years, plus a $1,000
cash award. In return the recipient is asked to share, with CLC
membership, his or her experiences using the grant. Robyn applied
for the grant to help her “deliver into the world” her
work-in-progress, “No Glamour Girls Need Apply,” an
historical fiction novel based on the lives of “Rosie-the-Riveter”-type
young women during World War II. This year’s Fellowship
Committee was made up of CLC board members Matt Ball, a middle
school Language Arts teacher; Kristen Darbyshire, a soon-to-be-published
author, illustrator, and middle school art teacher, Jendy Murphy,
a youth services public librarian; and Meg Seinberg-Hughes, an
elementary school library media specialist. Congratulations to
Robyn. We look forward to seeing her at CLC events, and hearing
about her work at our membership meeting in 2009.
Alexandra Siy's new book SNEEZE! has received star reviews from

two years in Alaska, and is scheduling school and library visits
for the 2007-08 year.
Coleen Paraore's new novel, The Cupid Chronicles, is in stores
now. "In this heartwarming romantic comedy, the sequel to
The Wedding Planner's Daughter, high-school freshman Willa Havisham
hosts dances at her family's Cape Cod inn to help save the local
library and hopefully date a certain fair-haired boy."

Saturday Escape is featured in the 2007 Family Reading Partnership calendar.
Dan is in good company; the Ithaca-based partnership’s calendar
includes work by Lynne Cherry, Rosemary Wells, Tomie dePaola, and
Marc Brown, among others. Read more about the partnership and the
calendar at www.familyreading.org. The same illustration also appears

McGinn’s Big
Win, debuts this summer, and she has just signed a new 2-book deal
with Simon & Schuster for a “Six Feet Under Meets Stand
