Submit Nominations for the 2009 The Micki Nevett Sparkler Award

“The Micki Nevett Sparkler Award” Inaugurated in December, 2007, in celebration of our friend, the legendary children’s librarian, Micki Nevett, the Children’s Literature Connection of New York will annually bestow the Micki Nevett Sparkler Award at our May Membership Dinner. The award will be presented to an individual in our community who is a true champion of children’s literature -- a “sparkler” like Micki -- someone who excites and inspires others through sharing her or his own great love of reading.
How to Nominate:
Members in good standing of the Children’s Literature Connection are invited to nominate individuals for the Micki Nevett Sparkler Award by writing to the Children’s Literature Connection at: The Children’s Literature Connection PO Box 38059 Albany, NY 12203 ATT: Sparkler Award by April 10, 2009. If you are not of member of CLC, but wish to join and enjoy the many benefits of this wonderful organization (or, if your membership has lapsed, come on back – we miss you!) please visit our membership page for details.

Please make the check out to The Children’s Literature Connection and mark “Sparkler Award” on the memo line. Contributions will be accepted on a continuing basis, but to create the starter fund from which we will draw the award, we would appreciate receiving initial donations by April 2, 2008.
We encourage all CLC members, as well as all friends of Micki, to consider a donation, however large or small. Please spread the word. All donors will be gratefully acknowledged in the CLC Newsletter and at the Annual Membership Dinner. Micki’s husband, David, and daughter, April, will be our guests that evening.

James Preller has two hardcover books coming out in 2009: A picture book, Mighty Casey (Feiwel & Friends, February), and a middle-grade novel on bullying, Bystander (Feiwel & Friends, September). He also blogs regularly at jamespreller.com. In 2008, both Six Innings and Along Came Spider were named by the New York Public Library in its’ annual list of “100 Books for Reading and Sharing.”
Bina Williams, a longtime member of CLC, is running for a seat on the Newbery award committee. Members of the Association for Library Service to Children can vote for her this spring!
Rebecca Rupp’s Sarah Simpson’s Rules for Living (Candlewick, 2008) has just been published by Brilliance Audio as an audiobook, available on both CD and MP3-CD. It’s unabridged, read by Emily Durante.
Peter Marino’s new YA Novel Magic and Misery is coming out in April from Holiday House.
Rose Kent’s middle-grade novel, Rocky Road was recently acquired by Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers and will publish in 2010.
Peter DeWitt will be continuing his popular education segments on WNYT Channel 13. They’ll play on the mid-day broadcast every Tuesday from 11 am- noon.
Alexandra Siy is the recipient of the 2008 American Institute of Physics Science Writing Award for her book Sneeze!. Her picture book (illustrated by Jacqueline Rogers), One Tractor, has been published by Holiday House.
Jennifer Roy has announced the publication of Trading Faces, the first title in a three book series written with her twin sister Julia DeVillers. The book is for ages 8-13 and is being published by Simon & Schuster. Go to www.twinauthors.com to find out more!

Is It Time to Renew Your CLC membership?
Check the expiration date that appears on the mailing label of our most recent newsletter. If the date has passed or is fast approaching, follow these easy steps:
1. Visit the Children’s Literature Connection members page at where you will find a membership form.
2. Print it and fill it out.
3. Send the completed form and check for $25 made out to CLC to Janice Toomajian, 15 Oxford Circle, Troy, NY 12180
4. If all else fails, email Janice or call her at 518-271-1466.
Membership Bargains!
Institutional memberships: Save $5.00 per year on membership. If 5 or more colleagues in an institution such as a school or public library join CLC at the same time, the membership fee will be $20 per person. All the colleagues should fill out individual membership forms, send them in together with payment, and designate one of those applicants as a central person to contact for renewals.
Student memberships: The student membership fee is $15 per year. Students should complete membership forms and enclose copies of their current student I.D.
